Only once have Albion won their last game of a Premier League season, when they really had to in the Great Escape season of 2004/05. Three out of the last four final games have ended in defeat, with the being that incredible 5-5 draw in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge of Manchester United.
Both sides in Saturday’s encounter between Bournemouth and Albion are mathematically safe following Norwich’s defeat at Arsenal last weekend, and both will breathe a sigh of relief as they are sitting 18th and 19th in the Premier League form table with only rock bottom Villa (11 consecutive defeats) below them.
Albion’s defeat at home to West Ham United on Saturday finally puts paid to the hopes of 50 points this season, and they can now only match the 47 points achieved in 2011 and 2012.
The Hawthorns welcomes high-flying West Ham United to the Hawthorns this weekend, with both sides on a league unbeaten run, although Albion’s one-match unbeaten run pales into insignificance against the Hammers’ stretch of nine Premier League games without defeat.
With the eyes of the world on the match on Monday night, and most viewers rooting for the Baggies, they delivered a good performance, in the second half at least, and in the process pretty much handed the title to Leicester City.
