The Baggies were unfortunate to lose to Chelsea having kept them at bay for 82 minutes before a mis-hit shot allowed Azpilicueta to set up Batshuayi for the winner.
Nonetheless, it means that Albion have now suffered four 1-0 home defeats in succession and will complete their Premier League campaign with visits to Manchester City and Swansea City.
Only two wins will result in Albion getting to the 50-point mark, and both Clarke’s team of 2013 and Hodgson’s team of 2012 had more points after 36 games that Pulis’s current group. Perhaps a more realistic target is keeping 8th place but that will not prove easy with Southampton and Bournemouth only below the Baggies on goal difference, and Leicester City just two points behind.
